Abstract. Cross argues that design is a distinct mode of knowing alongside sciences and humanities — neither reducible to engineering nor to art — and that "design science" should aim at understanding designerly reasoning rather than dressing design up in scientific clothes. A foundational position statement for the field's epistemology.
