Abstract. Documents the extension of aviation-style checklists to surgery. The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist trial showed reductions of 36 percent in complications and 47 percent in deaths across eight hospitals worldwide, validating checklists as a tool for externalising memory requirements and catching lapses.
