Abstract. Documents the gap between the strict Ericsson-Simon think-aloud protocol (verbalisation as parallel report only) and what UX practitioners actually do (probing, clarifying, soliciting reactions). Argues for a middle "speech-communication" model and makes the case that disciplined deviation from the original protocol can be methodologically sound.
