Abstract. Reviews studies that control for rehearsal, chunking, and long-term memory support and concludes that the genuine capacity limit of focused attention is closer to 4 plus or minus 1 items for novel information, not Miller's original 7 plus or minus 2. Now the canonical figure for working memory capacity in HCI design.
