Abstract. Observational study of 98 nurses preparing 4,271 medication administrations. Each interruption was associated with a 12.1 percent increase in procedural failures and a 12.7 percent increase in clinical errors, providing one of the strongest empirical demonstrations that divided attention in safety-critical work has a quantifiable cost.
